CABLE DESIGN & RELIABILITY

Understand the layers. Improve the system.

Cable construction, electrical stresses, wet-ageing behaviour and corrosion need to be considered as a connected system.

Emission shields

The existing cable-design page describes an emission shield between the conductor screen and insulation. Its purpose is to limit electron injection into the insulation and reduce the risk of degradation.

An additional layer at the outer insulation boundary is also described for higher-voltage designs. Material choice and controlled multilayer extrusion are central to assessing this approach.

Wet-ageing tests

Long-term wet-ageing tests examine how cable systems perform under demanding conditions. Compound selection, semi-conductive screens and processing all influence the outcome.

Eifelkabel reports support for 66 kV cable tests addressing CIGRE TB 722 and the requirements of VDE 0276-620. These are project references rather than blanket certification of every proposed cable design.

Corrosion & submarine cables

Submarine cable reliability depends on the interaction between water exposure, metal components, polymers and protective layers. The portfolio discusses corrosion and electrical degradation under wet conditions.

It also highlights the importance of assessing water-blocking additives for saltwater exposure. Detlef Wald’s contribution to CIGRE work on corrosion prevention provides a connection between practical consultancy and industry research.
